The City of Santa Fe Public Works Department is thinning invasive plant species, primarily Trees of Heaven and Siberian elm trees, from the Arroyo Mascaras near Rosario Boulevard. Felling of larger hazard trees and upper terrace work with bucket trucks will take place on Tuesday, February 14, and Wednesday, February 15, 2023. Tree trimming work will block parking and may affect traffic in the area. Community members should not park in front of cones in the work areas and should take caution when walking or driving near the work zones.
The City manages vegetation in the arroyos to ensure the space is safe and open for recreation and to protect and improve local ecosystems. Removing invasive plant species from arroyos keeps them stable and healthy by supporting the existing native vegetation, which in turn provides higher-quality habitats for native species as well as critical bank stabilization along the arroyo.
The Public Works Department has contracted with Seeds of Wisdom to complete the thinning project.
