Sunday, Nov. 14, Frenchy's Field, Plus: CHART Leadership Reports to Governing Body Tonight
The CHART (Culture, History, Art, Reconciliation and Truth) Santa Fe project invites residents of the City and County of Santa Fe/Oga Po’geh to its first public event on Sunday, November 14, 2021, 2-4 p.m., at Frenchy’s Field. The program will consist of a brief, collective homage to the Santa Fe River followed by a meet and greet with the CHART team. This event is free and open to the public. The original inhabitants of present-day Santa Fe (“White Shell Water Place”) settled in the area because of its waters—springs and a river that sustained human life. Today, the Santa Fe River--flowing from the Upper Watershed, winding through the city, traveling southward to the Rio Grande--still serves as a significant source of water for the community.
CHART Co-Director Valerie Martínez says: “As CHART launches its public events, we want to start by paying homage to water, lifeblood of community. It is our shared asset, connecting us and sustaining us. We think it’s a good place to begin a wide range of public events that will take place through May of 2022.”
The CHART team asks each person to bring a small bowl or mug and a full water bottle to the event in order to participate in a short ceremony honoring the Santa Fe River. People should wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
After the ceremony, Santa Feans will be able to meet members of the CHART project team and enjoy snacks and warm beverages. The CHART survey will also be available at the event, with related activities for children, youth, and adults. This event is suitable for all ages. Santa Fe families—children, youth, adults, and elders—are especially encouraged to attend.
Limited parking for the event (including handicapped) is available near the entrance to Frenchy’s Field at 2001 Agua Fria Street. The nearest crossroad is Osage Ave. A free bike valet will be provided for those who want to cycle to the event along the Santa Fe River Trail. Santa Fe Trails Bus #1 stops at the intersection of Agua Fria and Osage, near Frenchy’s Field. Follow signage to various meeting places for the event.
The goal of the CHART project is to promote a sense of community for the residents of the city and county of Santa Fe/Oga Po’geh by listening to their perspectives and promoting a mutual understanding of shared values. CHART was sparked by controversies over monuments and statues, but the project is much wider in scope—reaching deeply into the diverse communities of Santa Fe/Oga Po’geh to listen and learn.
Ultimately, citizens who participate in the process will contribute to forward-looking solutions for the City of Santa Fe Governing Body. CHART is part of ongoing efforts to understand our complex histories and stories and to promote truth, healing, and reconciliation.
