City of Santa Fe Reopens W. Alameda Street

5 Oct, 2023

SANTA FE, October 5, 2023 – The City of Santa reopened W. Alameda Street to through traffic on the afternoon of Thursday, October 5, 2023. The road had been closed while staff and contractors completed an emergency redesign/rebuild project following the collapse of two culverts and the roadway above in March 2023.

"This project was much more than just repaving a road," said Mayor Alan Webber. "This was an incredibly complex feat of structural and environmental engineering to rebuild the culvert system and bridge above to the highest safety standards, and to meet the future needs of the roadway when we embark on the larger W. Alameda Capital Improvement Project. Thank you to our dedicated and hard-working project team, and to the Santa Fe community for their patience as we completed this project – the right way – to ensure it will last for years to come."

Mayor Webber, elected officials, and City staff gathered on Thursday to recognize the efforts of the project team and celebrate the completion of the project. The newly constructed bridge and culvert system are designed to not only safely carry traffic across the arroyo, but also to accommodate seasonal stormwater flows and flooding incidents and prevent erosion around the site. The infrastructure is also designed to support the widening of the road and addition of bike lanes and sidewalks in the future and will not have to be rebuilt when the larger improvement project is initiated.
