The City of Santa Fe Parks and Open Space Division warmly invites community members to a ribbon cutting on Monday, April 24, at 12:00 p.m. to celebrate a new sign about Gunnison's Prairie dogs at Frenchy’s Field Park with Mayor Alan Webber, City Councilors, Parks Division staff, Patricia Carlton, president of People for Native Ecosystems, and sign artist, George Lawrence. The sign installed at the park provides details about the life cycle of prairie dogs and the ways they support our ecosystem.
The Mayor has declared Monday, April 24, 2023, “Prairie Dog Day” and will read a proclamation at the event. The proclamation details the unique traits of prairie dogs, including their amazing ability to reduce erosion and runoff through their prodigious tunneling, as well as their intricate social structure. Prairie dogs are considered a keystone species because their burrowing habits and colonies support numerous other animals and plant life around them.
With spring well underway, prairie dogs are coming out of hibernation in time to be viewed during this celebration!
