How the Program Works

The City of Santa Fe allows candidates for mayor and city council to participate in a public financing system under Chapter 9 of the Municipal Code. The candidate submits a Declaration of Intent and the required number of nominating petition signatures and contributions. The City Clerk must verify the number of $5 contributions necessary to become publicly financed and the County Clerk must verify the number of signatures required on the nomination petition by the 89th day before election day.

Funding, Restrictions, and Accountability

Once certified, publicly financed candidates receive a fixed grant from the City’s Public Campaign Finance Fund within three business days of certification by the County Clerk. In return, the Municipal Code states they may only accept small contributions (up to $100), are prohibited from accepting personal or private large-dollar donations beyond small local contributions, and must stay within the spending caps set for publicly funded races. All candidates, whether publicly funded or not, must comply with a structured disclosure schedule, filing campaign finance statements at key intervals leading up to and following the election.
