City of Santa Fe Celebrating 150th Anniversary of Arbor Day

28 Apr, 2022

Public Invited To Tree Planting on Friday, Apr. 29

The City of Santa Fe will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day on Friday, April 29 at 1:30 p.m. with a Tree Planting Event hosted by the Parks Division on the Santa Fe Plaza. The event will celebrate the planting of an American elm (Ulmus americana) donated by the Jean Cocteau Cinema and George R.R. Martin. Additionally, Parks staff will install three other trees in the Plaza, and oversee the installation of fresh sod in the turf areas. City staff from Parks and Open Space, Environmental Services, and Water Conservation will be on hand to answer questions about environmental programs regarding trees, water, recycling, and sustainability.

“We are excited to celebrate Arbor Day by planting a beautiful tree and sprucing up the Plaza, which is the heart of our City Different,” said Melissa McDonald, Parks and Open Space Division Director. “We are thankful for this donation that will grace the city for years to come; and through other generous donations, we are building the tree canopy in public spaces in an appropriate way, through our Tree Smart Santa Fe initiative.”

This Arbor Day project contributes to the goals set out by the Tree Smart Santa Fe Initiative launched in 2021, and its sister program The Bees, Trees, and Water Campaign; as well as the City’s Bee City, USA and Tree City, USA designations. It also support the goals outlined in the Sustainable Santa Fe 25-year plan passed in 2018.
