SANTA FE, December 1 – Santa Fe is officially the newest member of the Major Arena Soccer League 2 (MASL 2), the highest level of arena soccer in North America. The City of Santa Fe has collaborated with the new team owner, David Fresquez, to support this exciting new community opportunity, and the arena soccer franchise will play games at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center (GCCC) beginning in December 2023.
"We are, once again, making history in the beautiful city of Santa Fe," said born-and-raised Santa Fean team owner David Fresquez. "Santa Fe is a worldwide destination, it makes sense that we bring the world’s game to our city. "Our franchise will bring out everything magical and diverse our community has to offer and our games and players will be accessible to all citizens of Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico."
“Santa Fe loves soccer! And now we’ll have a Santa Fe team playing in the Major Arena Soccer League, representing our kids, our families, and our community! The City is delighted to provide an assist and we’re eager to see David Fresquez and the team score the first goal,” said Mayor Alan Webber.
"Santa Fe is the perfect community for professional arena soccer, we look forward to watching soccer grow in a beautiful city," said MASL 2 Commissioner Chris Economides.
The season will kick off in December 2023 and run from December to March annually. There will be a minimum of 6 home games at GCCC in the ice area. The area will be converted to indoor turf with a thermal-controlled subfloor to protect the ice for the games, while still allowing it to be used for hockey, figure skating, and other ice activities. The subfloor may also be utilized for other small-scale indoor events at GCCC that require seating.
“This collaboration is such a wonderful opportunity for our community and youth to see this level of arena soccer in our Community Center, the GCCC,” said Jeremy Perea, GCCC Recreation Complex Manager. “The possibilities are endless and we are beyond excited to host the professional team.”
In the coming months, the community can look forward to name and logo considerations and community town hall discussions with the team owner before the team’s first season begins in 2023.
David Fresquez founded Age Friendly Senior Care, a Santa Fe based senior caregiver company, in 2014. He is currently the Board President of the Santa Fe Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. For more information or questions related to the soccer team, please email him at dm.fresquez@gmail.com.
