Seed Library at the Southside Branch Library Reopening March 25

3 Mar, 2023

The Southside Branch Library is excited to reopen their Seed Library on Saturday, March 25, during the library’s regularly scheduled hours. The Seed Library, operated by the Santa Fe Extension Master Gardeners’ Seed Stewards, houses thousands of open-pollinated vegetable, herb, and flower seeds donated by local growers and commercial seed companies. Patrons may receive up to 5 seed packets from the Seed Library at no cost; library card not required.

Since its launch in 2019, Santa Fe Seed Library has distributed nearly 15,000 seed packets to the community. Open-pollinated seeds, versus hybridized or genetically modified seeds, can thrive in a specific regional climate, geography, and hydrology, making them more adaptable to climatic change and resistant to environmental stresses felling plants grown from imported seeds from other regions or countries. Working together as a community to save and give local seeds to other community members strengthens our community and Santa Fe’s ecosystem at the same time.

Seed Library patrons new to growing and saving seeds should check out the variety of seed-related programs the Library is offering here! You can also lend a hand by attending an upcoming seed-packing event to help get seeds ready for distribution.
