City of Santa Fe Ice Rink to Temporarily Close Through End of July for Repairs and Equipment Protection

9 Jun, 2025

The City of Santa Fe will temporarily close the Genoveva Chavez Community Center (GCCC) Ice Rink through the end of July due to a combination of planned facility upgrades and unanticipated environmental impacts on the ice surface. This proactive step is being taken to preserve public safety, protect critical equipment, and improve the long-term reliability of the rink.

The closure results from several overlapping factors:

  • Scheduled repair and replacement of facility windows, which will leave the rink temporarily exposed to the elements;
  • High humidity and early summer weather, which have already begun to degrade the quality of the ice surface;
  • The need to protect essential infrastructure, including compressors and mechanical systems that are vital to year-round operations.

“We expected the window replacement would have some operational impact,” said Brian Stinett, Recreation Division Director. “But the conditions deteriorated faster than expected. Closing now allows us to prevent damage to the rink’s infrastructure and come back stronger when all scheduled repairs to the ice plant are complete.”

City staff will use this extended closure period to complete a full slate of preventive maintenance. This includes servicing the compressors, inspecting mechanical systems, and addressing other facility needs to ensure the rink can reopen with fewer future interruptions.

“We know this is a major inconvenience for residents, athletes, and families who rely on the rink, especially in the summer,” said Henri Hammond-Paul, Director of Community Health and Safety. “But this is about stewardship—we’re making sure the equipment and facility are protected, and that we can deliver consistent, high-quality service in the long run.”

Maria Sanchez-Tucker, Community Services Director, emphasized the City’s commitment to transparency and community access. “We’re taking this opportunity to invest in the long-term health of the rink and the experience it offers our community. Our goal is always to minimize disruption and maximize value to the public.”

City officials encourage residents to explore other recreational opportunities at the Chavez Center and through Santa Fe’s many parks and facilities. Updates on the reopening timeline will be shared via the GCCC website and City of Santa Fe social media channels.
