Manage safe outdoor burning and fireworks within the City of Santa Fe. Obtain permits, follow legal requirements, and ensure public safety.
Burn Permits and Fireworks
Open burning in Santa Fe is generally prohibited, except for religious or ceremonial fires with a burn permit. There is a $10 permit fee, waived for registered non-profit organizations.
Submit your burn permit application at least three days prior to the burn date via:

Applications must include:
- Location, date, and time of the burn
- Purpose of the burn
- Means of extinguishing the fire
- Proof of payment to the City Cashiers Office (505-955-6557)
Fireworks within city limits are regulated for safety. Contact the Fire Prevention Office at 505-955-3310 for current information and to request permits.
Only fireworks that meet these criteria are legal:
- No explosive sound or report, not self-propelling, display under 15 feet high
- Snakes (up to 20g), smoke devices and spray balls (up to 25g)
- Wheels (≤60g per driver unit, any number of drivers allowed)
- Illuminating torches and colored fire (≤100g)
- Sparklers and dipped sticks (≤100g; chlorate/perchlorate ≤5g)
- Cylindrical fountains (≤75g, inside tube ≤¾ inch)
- Railway fuses, truck flares, smoke signals, and smoke pots
Fireworks must be sold with a permit from a permanent, recognized business location. Tents or temporary stands are not allowed.
Illegal fireworks include firecrackers, Roman candles, sky rockets, torpedoes, bombs, bottle rockets, and any self-propelled or explosive devices exceeding 15 feet in height or producing loud bangs. Violations can result in a misdemeanor, up to 90 days imprisonment, a fine up to $500, or both.
Remember: Watching professional fireworks displays is the safest way to enjoy fireworks.
