The City of Santa Fe Fire Departments 2026 - 41st Cadet Academy Testing Process is as follows:


  • February 2nd – Application Period Opens
  • March 15th - Application Period Closes
  • March 25th - Written Testing
  • March 25th – 29th - Physical Ability Testing (PAT) and Pack Testing
  • March 31st – April 2nd - Interviews

Each of these testing phases must be successfully completed in succession.

Experienced Firefighter/EMTs and Experienced Firefighter/Paramedics (Laterals) must provide proof of IFSAC Firefighter I/II Certification (or Equivalent) & a Valid U.S. State EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, or EMT-Paramedic License to be considered for the position of Lateral Cadet. Lateral Cadets may qualify for an abbreviated academy based on several academy performance factors. If you are applying for an experienced position, make sure to apply for the proper Experienced Firefighter/EMT or Experienced Firefighter/Paramedic job opening.

  • Individuals MUST arrive at 7:45 a.m. Doors will close promptly once all candidates are verified – NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Required Items to Bring: Picture ID that lists DOB.
  • Bring all the necessary items to be ready to take the PAT immediately following the written test.

This guide is a great resource to help you prepare for the exam. It’s available as a downloadable PDF that you can save or print. Two different versions are offered, each with unique practice test items to help you get ready!

Public Information Sessions and Physical Ability Testing take place at:

SFFD Info sessions are free to the public and will allow the candidate to learn more about the department, the hiring process, and the cadet training academy. Candidates will also have an opportunity to attempt the Physical Ability Test. If the candidate passes the Physical Ability Test at an Info Session, they will receive a PAT Certificate of Completion valid for the current hiring cycle.

  • Individuals MUST arrive at 8:45 a.m. Doors will close promptly at 9:00 a.m. – NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Required Items to Bring: Picture ID that lists DOB, water, athletic clothing (pants and long sleeve shirt are recommended), athletic shoes, or boots (no open-toe shoes).
  • Recommended Items to Bring: Kneepads or knee sleeves.
  • Candidate must watch the physical ability test overview prior to the info session.
  • If a candidate signs up for an info session and is a no-call/no-show, they will not be permitted to sign up for another session.

  • If you successfully pass our written test with a score of 70% or higher, we will schedule you to return on one of the dates above for our Physical Ability Testing (PAT). If you successfully pass our PAT, we will schedule you for Pack Testing on one of the above dates.
  • If you have a valid PAT certificate of completion for the current hiring cycle and you pass the written test, you will move directly to being scheduled for pack testing on one of the above dates.
  • If you pass all these portions of our testing process, we will schedule you for interviews
