Fire Code Enforcement
The Santa Fe Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO) enforces adopted fire codes to reduce fire risk, protect life and property, and support safe businesses, events, and public gatherings throughout the City of Santa Fe.

The City of Santa Fe has adopted the International Fire Code (IFC), 2021 Edition, with local amendments through City ordinance. The Fire Marshal’s Office is authorized to identify, correct, and abate fire hazards to protect life and property.
Fire codes establish minimum safety requirements. Property owners, businesses, and event organizers are encouraged to exceed these standards whenever possible.

The Fire Marshal’s Office takes all fire safety complaints seriously and ensures they are routed to the appropriate department.

Fire safety requirements for special events are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. All events are subject to review under the IFC 2021, IBC 2021, applicable NFPA standards, and City-adopted ordinances, as determined by the fire code official.
- Compliance with current City of Santa Fe burn restrictions
- Submission of a site plan showing:
- Exits
- Fire extinguisher locations
- No Smoking signage
- Fire lanes, hydrants, and Fire Department Connections (FDCs)
- Fire lanes must maintain a minimum clear width of 20 feet
- Hydrants and FDCs require a 10-foot clear radius
Required Equipment
- One 2A–10 BC fire extinguisher per booth
- Class K fire extinguisher required for deep fat frying
- One Class K for up to four fryers (80 lbs max each)
- Additional Class K for each additional group of four fryers
- Large fryers must follow manufacturer recommendations
- First aid kit
- Fire blanket
Booth & Cooking Layout
- 20 feet of clearance on two sides of cooking booths
- Limited space allowances:
- No more than two booths side-by-side
- Three-foot aisle between booth groupings
- No booths within 10 feet of amusement rides
- Barbecue pits at least 10 feet from combustible materials
- Propane tanks must be at least 10 feet from doors or windows
- ASME tanks verified by the New Mexico LPG Bureau
- State-issued permits required for special events
- UL-listed hoses, regulators, and connections
- Tanks secured, upright, and limited to one spare per booth
- Empty tanks removed immediately after use
- No tanks within 5 feet of ignition sources (10 feet for ASME tanks)
- No gas-fired heaters inside tents or canopies
- No indoor use while connected to fuel containers
- Must comply with IFC Chapter 31
- Tents must be properly secured
- 10-foot fire break required between tent groupings
