Inspections and Certificates of Compliance


The Fire Prevention Division plays a key role in the business licensing process by conducting required fire inspections and contributing to the City’s Certificate of Compliance review. This page explains when inspections are required, what to expect, and how the Fire Marshal’s Office fits into the overall process.

 
Inspections, Certificates, and Rates
Annual Fire Inspections

Annual inspections are required for buildings over 1,500 sq. ft. and specific occupancy types:

  • A-1 – Large Assembly Structures
  • A-2 – All Restaurants
  • E – Educational Facilities
  • M – Retail Stores
  • R-1 – Hotels and Motels

Inspections ensure compliance with IFC 2021 and NFPA standards. Deficiencies must be corrected before re-inspection and approval.

Deferred Submittal Inspections

Inspections for projects approved under the deferred submittal plan review process. Includes:

  • Rough-in inspections
  • Final inspections
  • Acceptance inspections

All conducted per IFC 2021 and NFPA standards. Schedule inspections by contacting the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Certificate of Compliance

The Fire Marshal’s Office participates in the Certificate of Compliance process after all prior licensing steps are complete.

Staff will contact your business to schedule inspections once your application is entered into the system.

Applying for a New or Renewing a Business License

Home Occupation Businesses

Businesses operating from a residence may require fire review as part of the Certificate of Occupancy.
