Paving Complete, Final Work Continues on North Guadalupe Street

The City of Santa Fe is proud to announce a major milestone in the transformative North Guadalupe Street infrastructure project: all paving is now complete. This significant achievement marks one of the final stages in an $11 million improvement effort funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).

This week, crews successfully completed the final lift of asphalt, officially finishing all paving along North Guadalupe Street, from West Alameda Street to Paseo de Peralta. Additional accomplishments include installing the valley gutter on the east side of West San Francisco Street, placing three cement collars, and finishing bark mulch installation throughout the new medians.

These upgrades are part of a comprehensive effort to modernize a vital corridor in the heart of Santa Fe. With the majority of major work now behind us, it is just a matter of weeks before the project is fully complete.

Key improvements now in place:

  • Smooth new pavement for safer, more comfortable travel
  • ADA-compliant sidewalks for enhanced pedestrian mobility
  • Five-foot-wide dedicated bike lanes for safer cycling
  • Modernized traffic signals to improve flow and intersection safety
  • Upgraded storm drainage to reduce flooding and improve runoff management
  • Energy-efficient LED street lighting for consistent, brighter illumination
  • Enhanced access to local businesses for a more inviting environment for customers and visitors

Final steps ahead
In the coming weeks, crews will focus on:

  • Roadway striping
  • Installation of new signage
  • Final adjustments to collars (manholes and valve boxes)

These finishing touches may involve brief, temporary lane closures but will move the project into its final phase.

Additionally, median landscaping, which will contribute to traffic calming and enhance the overall streetscape, will be funded by the City and carried out by Parks and Open Space at a later date. While not part of the current construction phase, this future enhancement reflects the City’s continued commitment to creating safer and more attractive public spaces.

A collective effort

The City of Santa Fe extends its sincere gratitude to the FHWA for their funding support, GM Emulsion and Wilson Co. for their exceptional work, and the residents and businesses of Santa Fe for their patience and cooperation throughout construction.

Once completed, the project will deliver safer, more efficient travel for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians while also improving accessibility and visibility for local businesses. North Guadalupe Street will serve the community more effectively for years to come.

West Alameda & Guadalupe Street Intersection Update

This week, the reconstruction of the intersection at West Alameda and Guadalupe Street was completed and reopened to traffic on Thursday, August 14, at 5:00 p.m. The intersection now features:

  • New LED traffic signals
  • ADA-compliant curb ramps
  • New LED street lighting

The project is now moving into the final layer of asphalt, beginning Monday, August 18. Rolling road closures will occur on Guadalupe Street from Paseo De Peralta to West Alameda Street, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. each day. Vehicle traffic will be restricted as paving operations progress.

Sidewalks are complete and provide full pedestrian access to all businesses. Please follow detour signage and exercise caution when driving in the area.

Project Update: Traffic Signal Activation and Upcoming Road Closure

This week, the contractor successfully activated the new traffic signals at Catron St & Guadalupe St and West San Francisco St & Guadalupe St, enhancing safety for drivers and pedestrians in the project area.

Upcoming Work:
To continue progress, Alameda St & Guadalupe St will be closed from August 11–14. Please plan accordingly and follow posted detours during this period.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve traffic safety and flow in the area.

Work on the Guadalupe Street project continues to move forward as planned.

Paving Schedule Update

Week of August 11: Crews will begin placing the first lift of asphalt along the corridor and will move into the Alameda intersection.

August 11 – August 22: The intersection of Alameda & Guadalupe Street will be fully closed to all traffic for approximately two weeks while work moves into that area.

August 25 – August 29: The final lift of asphalt will be placed from Agua Fria Street to Paseo De Peralta, completing the resurfacing portion of the project.

Please plan accordingly and follow all posted detour signs. We appreciate your continued patience as we make long-term improvements to this important corridor.

The City of Santa Fe has released updated paving schedules and revised lane closures/detour routes for the week of July 14, 2025.

As part of this ongoing work, crews will be paving the intersection of Johnson St and Guadalupe St on Saturday, July 12, 2025. Once this work is completed, northbound traffic flow will be fully restored on North Guadalupe Street, reconnecting Agua Fria St to Paseo De Peralta.

Sidewalks are fully open on both sides and will remain open during paving operations.

View the updated detour maps for details. If you encounter any issues, contact the project team.

Starting Monday July 7th 2025, Guadalupe St will be closed to South bound traffic at the intersection of Paseo De Peralta and North Guadalupe St extending to Solana St. Detour route will be Paseo De Peralta to Solana St. Closure is expected to last two weeks.

North Guadalupe Street Reopens to Traffic Following Asphalt Work

The City of Santa Fe is pleased to announce that North Guadalupe Street is now open to traffic following the successful completion of the first lift of new asphalt.

The reopened section extends from the intersection of Mckenzie Street north to Paseo De Peralta. As of yesterday, the contractor completed the necessary paving work, allowing for full restoration of traffic movements at the intersections of Mckenzie Street, Jefferson Street, Catron Street, and Solana Street.

Drivers are encouraged to proceed with caution as crews may continue to work in the area over the coming days. The City appreciates the public’s patience during this phase of infrastructure improvements and remains committed to keeping residents informed as the project progresses.

Guadalupe Street Reconstruction Project – Updated Closure Schedule

New details have been released regarding ongoing work on the Guadalupe Street Road Reconstruction Project. The relocation of two major gas mains is taking longer than originally anticipated by the Gas Company. As a result, adjustments have been made to the construction and road closure schedule.

Updated Road Closure Timeline:

Northbound:

  • West Alameda to Paseo De Peralta closed through July 4, 2025

Southbound:

  • West San Francisco to West Alameda closed June 30 – July 11, 2025
  • West San Francisco to Catron closed July 11 – July 26, 2025
  • Catron to Paseo De Peralta closed July 26 – August 8, 2025

Drivers are advised to plan ahead, expect delays, and follow all posted detour signs. Thank you for your understanding as this essential infrastructure work continues.

Roadwork continues to progress with crews installing cement median curbs and gutters, removing old asphalt, and preparing for paving.

A minor delay at Johnson Street and Guadalupe has not impacted progress in other areas. Once the Gas Company completes its work, paving will begin.

Thanks to a revised schedule, we now anticipate paving a larger section of the roadway, from San Francisco Street to Catron Street, and possibly extending to Paseo De Peralta, by the week ending June 21. This adjustment allows for a more efficient and expanded improvement of the corridor.

Gas Main Relocation Causes Two-Week Paving Delay

On Friday, May 30, 2025, a gas main was discovered only 6 inches under the existing asphalt at the intersection of Johnson and Guadalupe Streets. For public safety and to comply with the City Code, the gas main must be relocated to be 3 feet below the new pavement. New Mexico Gas Co. will expedite this unscheduled work, with a projected completion date of June 12. Paving is delayed until the relocation is complete and new segment schedules are attached. The project team will continue to move forward with other work on the project.

NEW PAVEMENT SUMMARY SCHEDULE:

  • North San Francisco to Catron. New completion date: 6-21-2025
  • North Catron to Paseo De Peralta 6-23-2025 – 7-11-2025
  • South Paseo De Peralta to Catron 7-12-2025 – 7-26-2025
  • North Catron to Johnson 7-26-2025 – 8-02-2025
  • South Johnson to San Francisco 8-02-2025 – 8-09-2025
  • South San Francisco to Alameda 8-09-2025 – 8-16-2025

Current Traffic Impacts

Guadalupe Street is presently closed to northbound traffic between West Alameda Street and Catron Street. In addition, several side streets, Johnson Street, McKenzie Street, and Jefferson Street, are closed where they intersect with Guadalupe. These streets remain accessible via Griffin Street.

What’s Changing?

Starting Monday, June 2, the northbound closure on Guadalupe Street will extend from West Alameda Street to Paseo De Peralta. This means northbound traffic will not be permitted along this stretch. However, Catron Street will remain open to both eastbound and westbound traffic.

Plan Ahead

Please follow all posted signs and detour routes. We recommend allowing additional time for travel through this area during construction. Sidewalks on both sides of the street will remain open for pedestrian traffic.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to enhance Santa Fe’s roads and infrastructure. Thank you for helping keep our community moving safely.
